General Manager

Job Summary

The General Manager will lead the Morden and Winkler locations providing organization and optimizations of personnel, dispatch/truck fleets, material recovery centre, and resources. The GM will provide overall leadership and direction to this division, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and values. This position will work out of the head office located in Winkler, MB while also overseeing the shop and material recovery centre in Morden, MB.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership and Business Development

  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key clients, industry partners, vendors, and Environmental Compliance Personnel.
  • Work in collaboration with the Sales Manager to assist the sales team in developing sales strategies, setting targets and achieving sales.
  • Identify and assess potential risks to the organization’s operations, assets and reputation.
  • Monitor industry trends, competition, regulatory compliance, and market conditions to identify opportunities, drive innovation, support customer needs, and make informed business decisions.
  • Foster positive community involvement by representing the company in public forums, conferences, and industry events.

 

Operations and Technology

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of commercial and residential collection service, including:
    • Work with other regions/managers within the organization to maintain a high level of service and efficiency, this includes communicating effectively when resources are limited to ensure all divisions complete their service.
    • Logistical decisions, ensuring consistent operations of day-to-day collection schedules. Understand the details of each route so operationally in compliance.
    • Ensure trucks are maintained in good working order to avoid disruptions in service.
    • Ensure smooth and efficient operation of the baling facility.
  • Evaluate regularly the efficiency of business procedures according to organizational objectives, including monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess operational performance, and take corrective actions to meet or exceed targets.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage technology to improve processes, efficiency and customer experiences.
  • Oversee routes optimization for your region and review/update for efficiencies.
  • Develop, implement and review standardized processes and procedures to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure operational issues are solved or communication has been provided to the customer within two hours.

 

Staffing and Administration 

  • Promote high level moral and culture within the organization.
  • Foster a positive work environment that promotes employee engagement, teamwork, and professional growth.
  • Ensure all operators and company reps are representing the company in a positive and professional manner.
  • Monitor overtime hours and develop a mitigation plan or STP (Situation, Target, Proposal) for anything that exceeds 5% of the total regular hours worked.
  • Review and monitor cross training and succession plans for employees. Move key employees to positions where they will succeed and assist with the development of the business.
  • Plan and monitor staffing to ensure effective and efficient day-to-day operations. When additional resources are needed such as employees or equipment, review with upper management and provide sufficient data to support the request.
  • Ensure all insurance is facilitated and valid for the facilities and equipment you are responsible for.
  • Provide leadership and guidance, overseeing all aspects of talent acquisition, employee development, performance management and retention.
  • Provide disciplinary action for all employees not following company directive.
  • Provide regular performance feedback to your staff.

 

Finance and Purchasing

  • Establish an annual budget using the previous years data as a starting point.
  • Take appropriate action to meet and exceed established financial targets and review regularly budgeted goals.
  • Enter all necessary information into a procurement platform for all purchases that exceed a certain threshold. Approve purchase requests for those that report to you.  
  • Assist with financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Provide a procurement analysis to better understand the need to procure and obtain quotes for larger asset purchases.

 

Training

  • Ensure new hires receive comprehensive orientation and familiarization with the company’s policies, procedures, and culture.
  • Ensure that employees receive the necessary safety training and education to perform their job effectively and safely.
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of the onboarding program and make improvements as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Safety Advisor and relevant departments to identify specific safety training needs and develop targeted programs.

 

Safety

  • Establish safety objectives and targets in alignment with company policies and industry best practices that ensures compliance with occupational health and safety regulations while fostering a safe work environment.
  • Ensure all safety guidelines and policies are strictly adhered to by customers and company representatives.
  • Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization, emphasizing the importance of safety as a core value.
  • Report any injuries to the Safety Advisor and work with them to gather details on the incident and how it can be prevented in the future.

 

Meetings and Reporting

  • Ensure all information and data being collected in Trux is being entered correctly.
  • Review of Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and ways to mitigate problem areas.
  • Review uptime and downtime of all equipment you are directly responsible for and create a reporting platform which outlines this information.
  • Meet with Senior Management to review productivity reports, missed carts and containers, current challenges and develop STP to mitigate challenges.
  • Meet with management to discuss current and future strategic goals and develop step-by-step directives to execute and achieve these goals.
  • Review all frontload routes and work collaboratively with the sales team to improve inefficiencies or other problem areas.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum five years of experience working supervisory, operations, or leadership roles.
  • Previous industry experience in waste management, fleet management or transportation is highly preferred.
  • Leadership skills, including customer service and relationship development focused, with the ability to uphold a positive work culture.
  • Must be process and detailed oriented with the ability to multitask.
  • Proficient in Microsoft programs and ability to learn many new software programs.
  • Honesty, integrity and proven work ethic.
  • Understands and adheres to job safety awareness and safety skills and instills this across organizations.
  • Mechanical aptitude and understanding of heavy equipment trucks highly preferred.
  • Minimum Class 5 Drivers’ License required; Class 1 considered a strong asset.
