Job Summary

The Landscape Lead Hand supports the Foreman in overseeing and coordinating landscape crews to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to a high standard of quality. This hands-on leadership role involves participating in and guiding a variety of landscaping tasks, including hardscape and softscape installations such as paving stones, retaining walls, soil preparation, tree and shrub planting, and sod installation.

Job Description

As a Landscape Lead Hand, you will assist the Foreman in leading and coordinating landscape crews to ensure efficient, high-quality completion of landscaping projects. You will work hands-on with your team on both softscape and hardscape installations, including tasks such as paving stone and retaining wall installation, soil preparation, tree and shrub planting, sod laying, and more. You will be responsible for directing day-to-day activities, managing tools and equipment, ensuring safety standards are met, and maintaining productivity. The role requires effective communication, leadership, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions on the job site.

  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Proactive in identifying and addressing issues on the job site. 
  • Knowledge of landscape installation techniques for both softscaping and hardscaping.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with crew members, foreman, and other team members. 
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in all weather conditions. 
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on quality and efficiency. 

 

Job Duties: 

Team Coordination & Supervision: 

  • Assist the Foreman in directing daily activities of the crew, ensuring proper resource allocation and adherence to timelines. 
  • Ensure all crew members are properly trained, equipped, and motivated to complete tasks. 
  • Assist in overseeing the quality of work, ensuring it meets company and customer standards. 
  • Provide guidance to crew members, fostering skill development and ensuring work is done efficiently and safely. 
  • Help track progress on the job site, reporting any delays, issues, or changes to the Foreman. 
  • Act as a key point of contact for crew members and assist in resolving any conflicts or issues that arise during the workday. 

Equipment & Materials Management: 

  • Operate and maintain equipment such as crew trucks, skid steers, and hand tools. 
  • Ensure that all tools and equipment are in good working condition and report any malfunctions to the Foreman. 
  • Assist in managing materials, ensuring that everything needed for the project is on-site and properly stored. 
  • Coordinate with the Foreman to ensure all necessary permits, clearances, and documentation are in place before starting projects. 

Safety & Compliance: 

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies, maintaining a safe working environment at all times. 
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and ensure safety protocols are followed by all team members. 
  • Address any potential safety hazards and escalate issues as necessary. 
  • Ensure that all crew members wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and use tools and equipment safely. 

Quality & Customer Service: 

  • Monitor and inspect work to ensure it meets both company standards and client expectations. 
  • Communicate project updates to the Foreman, crew, and customer as needed. 
  • Ensure that the job site remains clean and organized throughout the day and after completion. 
  • Assist in ensuring that all project documentation, including daily reports, is completed and submitted on time. 

 

Results Expected: 

  • Projects are completed on schedule, within the allocated budget, and meet quality standards. 
  • Crew members are motivated and skilled, consistently improving efficiency and performance. 
  • Equipment and tools are maintained and function properly, minimizing downtime. 
  • Safety incidents are minimized, and all safety protocols are followed. 
  • High levels of customer satisfaction due to the timely and high-quality completion of projects. 

 

Requirements: 

Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma or GED. 
  • At least 3 years of experience in the landscape industry, with at least 1 year in a leadership or supervisory role. 
  • Ability to operate required landscape equipment (e.g., skid steer, crew trucks, hand tools) in a safe and efficient manner. 
  • Strong working knowledge of landscape installation practices, including both softscape and hardscape techniques. 
  • Driver’s license required. 

Skills: 

  • Ability to read and understand project work orders, blueprints, and specifications. 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks. 
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. 
  • Ability to maintain high standards of quality and safety on the job site. 
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with both the crew and management. 
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately. 
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials and work in various weather conditions. 

 

Work Conditions: 

  • Ability to work with a variety of tools and equipment. 
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. regularly. 
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, etc.). 
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends as required by project deadlines. 
  • Must have stamina for physically demanding work and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
