Do you think you have the skills and education? Are your qualifications matching the job postings, yet you are still not getting interview invites or being shortlisted? There might be something going wrong.
During my time as a student at Assiniboine College, like any other student, I always thought I would land the job I had always wanted because I believed that I was qualified. I used the same resume I had for years and submitted applications months before graduating. I applied without a cover letter and used the same resume for all open positions.
I thought I would secure a job even before finishing my final term at school. After applying to many positions, I received no interview invites.
I paused.
I pictured myself diving into the job market with strong determination. I realized I was making several mistakes.
Here are some tips that can help you land your dream job too—tips I wish I had known before wasting so many applications:
- First, customize your resume for each job application. This means adjusting your resume to highlight the skills and experiences that match what each employer is looking for. You don’t need to (and shouldn’t) misrepresent yourself, just make sure to emphasize the skills and experiences that truly align with the role if you have them. This personalized touch makes it clear why you’ll be a great fit for the position.
- Next, reach out to professionals in your industry. It might feel a bit intimidating at first, but connecting with people who work in your field can be incredibly helpful. I admit, I didn’t have many connections and, to be honest, I had fewer than 30 connections on LinkedIn when I started job hunting. However, I realized that these people could offer advice, share job leads, and even help you make valuable connections. These relationships can be a big boost in your job search.
- Finally, write a personalized cover letter for each job you apply to. This is not just a formality; it is your chance to show the employer that you are genuinely interested in the job and that you have taken the time to understand what they need. A well-written cover letter can set you apart from other candidates and make a strong impression.
Note that companies vary in their hiring techniques, but by following these tips, you’re not just sending out applications. You’re creating a powerful and unique job search strategy.
Each step brings you closer to finding that perfect job!
